MARCH: BOOK ONE shortlisted for Young Hoosier Book Award!

November 17, 2015 / More →

More congratulations are in order for Team March (Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell). Last night at the Indiana Library Federation's annual conference, the Association of Indiana School Library Educators announced their shortlist of candidates for next year's prestigious Young Hoosier Book Award — and the most advanced category, Middle Grades, features March: Book One!

Indiana's thousands of libraries will now spend the next year stocking up on the nominated titles, before the 2016-17 school year begins and students begin voting.

Meanwhile, students in Oklahoma are reading March in preparation to vote in the Sequoyah Book Awards, which have also nominated Book One for their 2016 list.

And as the year's end nears, March: Book Two has been declared one of the Best Books of 2015 by Publishers Weekly as well as The Washington Post, which declared "there is perhaps no more important modern book to be stocked in American school libraries... March is a powerful marriage of eloquent, stirring words and artful, gut-punching pictures."

THE STORY OF MY TITS is one of the year's best graphic novels!

Congratulations to Jennifer Hayden — her ambitious, hilarious, heartbreaking graphic memoir The Story of My Tits continues to earn rave reviews, and was announced today as one of the Best Books of 2015 by both and Library Journal!

"I wanted something that would take my voice and transmit it to the reader as easily as if I was having a beer with them at the kitchen table," explains Hayden in a new interview with Publishers Weekly. "I wanted that informality and immediacy." Readers have embraced the result, which goes far beyond a breast-cancer narrative to a page-turning exploration of adolescence, adulthood, family, love, and grief. "I set out to tell a survivor's story that would be the story of a woman, and the last chapter is cancer — not a cancer story per se."

Jennifer's next appearance is next Saturday, November 21, at the Miami Book Fair.

FEAR AND LOATHING ON THE ROAD: Artist Troy Little's Signing Tour!

October 29, 2015 / More →

It's here! After great anticipation and a sell-out early launch at New York Comic-Con, Troy Little's stunning graphic novel adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas hits comic shops everywhere this week.

But how to promote this full-color monument to American ingenuity? For guidance, we turned to the words of Thompson himself: "If a thing like this is worth doing at all, it's worth doing right... We'd be fools not to ride this strange torpedo all the way out to the end." So the only way to handle a book like this, we felt, was to dress up like human peacocks and get crazy, then screech off across the desert and hold some signings.

We'll be replicating, as closely as possible, the actual journey depicted in the book — drinks at the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills, driving through the California desert in a convertible, and searching for the American Dream on the Las Vegas Strip. But instead of a briefcase of intoxicants, Troy will be loaded with art supplies, so he can document the experience in comics form as we go. So what are you waiting for? "Buy the ticket, take the ride!"

Named one of the year's 20 Essential Graphic Novels by ACBD (the French Association of Comics Critics)!

"With detailed hatching reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch, Ludovic Debeurme crafts fantastical and poignant scenes, exploring the ordinary monstrosity of man and his anxieties… Debeurme has invented a unique poetry here, with intelligence and grace." Les InRocks

"Renée's triple-voiced narrative is beautifully constructed, and proves Debeurme's enduring talent for breaking the traditional boundaries of comics. Simply excellent." Citrouille / Association of Booksellers for Youth

The acclaimed French cartoonist Ludovic Debeurme returns with the devastating follow-up to his prize-winning graphic novel Lucille. While Lucille moves back in with her mother and Arthur serves time in prison for murder, directionless young Renée becomes obsessed with a married jazz musician twice her age. Balancing the grotesque and the graceful, Debeurme's haunting border-less panels follow these three lost souls between dreams and reality, twining their stories together into a poignant and universal search for redemption.

CBS profiles Congressman Lewis's MARCH at Comic-Con and the youth he's inspiring

July 24, 2015 / More →

Today, CBS This Morning featured an amazing segment on the award-winning March series created by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell, calling Lewis a "civil rights superhero."

CBS's Jan Crawford asked the congressman about his recent trip to Comic-Con, where he dressed "in costume" recreating the trench coat and backpack he wore to march for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, 50 years ago. At the convention, he joined hands with local students who had studied March and led a "children's march" through the halls of Comic-Con, with a huge crowd following solemnly behind.

"I walked with little children, wonderful little children," says Lewis, who was joined by Aydin and Powell every step of the way. "We marched onto the floor of the convention center. It was unreal, unbelievable... and this throng of people came walking with us."

CBS then sat down with the students who had marched with Congressman Lewis to find out what they'd learned from March. "He empowers me to fight for what is right... not giving up so easily." said 9-year-old Valerie Medina. "A superhero does the right thing, and so does he," agreed Ameera Ali, 10. "Superheroes are meant to help people, and that's exactly what John Lewis does."

Lewis explained his goals for the series, which has already achieved #1 New York Times Bestseller status, become required reading at colleges & universities nationwide, and been honored by both the Coretta Scott King & Robert F. Kennedy Book Awards: "It is important to educate, to inform, and to inspire another generation of young people to say 'When I see something that is not right, not fair... I too can do something. I can speak up. I can speak out. I can find a way to get in the way.'"

Watch the segment here, and please help us spread the word about this vital project — join the March!

Announcing Jennifer Hayden's magnum opus: THE STORY OF MY TITS!

June 30, 2015 / More →

"Heartbreaking and riveting, Jennifer Hayden's caustic, sarcastic wit streams through her quirky drawings, unfolding a survivor's tale and so much more. The Story of My Tits takes us from her flat-chested adolescence to small-boobed acceptance, then loss - until the dramatic reconstruction of Jennifer herself." —Marisa Acocella Marchetto, author of Cancer Vixen and Ann Tenna

"Hayden's work reminds me of why I began drawing comics, and why I continue... comforting, straightforward and strongly connected to life." — Gabrielle Bell, author of Lucky and Cecil & Jordan in New York

"Hayden's cheerful profanity and scratchy lines give the work a homey, intimate feel." Publishers Weekly

"The central character is the author herself, and she's a joy... seriously fun, alive, and inspiring — as an artist, a writer, a woman, and a human being." Under the Radar

When Jennifer Hayden was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43, she realized that her tits told a story. Across a lifetime, they’d held so many meanings: hope and fear, pride and embarrassment, life and death. And then they were gone. Now, their story has become a way of understanding her story. Growing up flat-chested and highly aware of her inadequacies… heading off to college, where she “bloomed” in more ways than one… navigating adulthood between her mother’s mastectomy, her father’s mistress, and her musician boyfriend’s problems of his own—not to mention his sprawling family. Then the kids come along… As cancer strikes three different lives, some relationships crumble while others emerge even stronger, and this sarcastic child of the ‘70s finally finds a goddess she can believe in.

For everyone who’s faced cancer personally, or watched a loved one fight that battle, Hayden’s story is a much-needed breath of fresh air, an irresistible blend of sweetness and skepticism. Rich with both symbolism & humor, The Story of My Tits will leave you laughing, weeping, and feeling grateful for every day.
