Saturday, September 17th

  • Insiders & Outsiders: Perspectives & Political Commentary
In the White Oak Room @ 2 to 3 P.M.

In the long, storied tradition of political cartooning, most of its artists have been outsiders, commenting on the world of politics. With the rise of comics journalism, there are now cartoonists who have had the chance to report about politics and world events from the inside. Join moderator (and SPX Executive Director) Warren Bernard as he explores both perspectives with Ruben Bolling, Sofia Warren, Ally Shwed, and Andy Warner.
  • The New New Yorker Cartoonists
In the White Oak Room @ 4 to 5 P.M.

The New Yorker cartoon has been around for almost 100 years— why is the art form so beloved? On this panel, which consists of some of the many new and diverse cartoonists that have been brought in, moderator Liza Donnelly will examine the past and present world of New Yorker cartoons with Lonnie Millsap, Sofia Warren, and Sara Lautman.

Sunday, September 18th

  • Let’s Draw Comics! An Animal Cartooning Workshop for Kids
In the Glen Echo Room @ 12 to 1 P.M.

Join Jonathan Schnapp (Order of the Night Jay) and Jared Cullum (Kodi) as we explore cartooning with animals! Whether you want to draw pets, or wild animals, or “anthropomorphics,” or even make-believe creatures, we’ll learn how to take a complex animal and draw it with simple shapes that you can use to bring your comics to life.
  • Celebrating 25 Years of Top Shelf
In the White Oak Room @ 2:30 to 3:30 P.M.

Time flies! It was 25 years ago at SPX ’97 when Chris Staros and Brett Warnock first joined forces to create one of the landmark indie graphic novel publishers of our time. Come celebrate a quarter-century of publishing quirky, sophisticated, captivating, groundbreaking, and personal comics — and look ahead to Top Shelf’s bright future! Editor-in-chief Chris Staros and senior editor Leigh Walton lead a lively discussion with such luminaries as Jeffrey Brown (Loved & Lost, Incredible Change-Bots), Nate Powell (Come Again, March), Jennifer Hayden (The Story of My Tits), Jarod Roselló (Red Panda & Moon Bear), and Hannah Templer (Cosmoknights).
