KODI, BOOK TOUR, and WHAT IF WE WERE nab Eisner nominations!

June 9, 2021

Top Shelf's 2021 Eisner Award nominations include KODI by Jared Cullum, THE BOOK TOUR by Andi Watson, and WHAT IF WE WERE by Axelle Lenoir.
Top Shelf Productions is thrilled to announce that our whimsical and handsomely crafted graphic novels have received a combined FOUR nominations for the 2021 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.

Jared Cullum's debut graphic novel Kodi, a heartwarming watercolor tale of human–bear friendship set in the Pacific Northwest, has been nominated in two categories (Best Publication for Early Readers and Best Painter/Multimedia Artist). "Ever since I began to draw and make stories, it has been a long-shot starry-eyed dream to one day eventually be considered for the Eisner Awards,” says Cullum. “I am overwhelmed with thankfulness for these nominations, and humbly reflect that this work would not exist without my constantly patient and encouraging wife and children, the erudite shepherding of my publishing team at Top Shelf, and those who have trod this path ahead of me.”

After several years making books for youth, acclaimed cartoonist Andi Watson returned to adult readers with the Kafkaesque dark comedy The Book Tour, which is now nominated in the prestigious category Best Graphic Album: New. “I’m extremely proud and delighted that The Book Tour is nominated for an Eisner Award, particularly in a year that has been so challenging for everyone,” Watson says. “While I couldn’t embark on an actual book tour this year, I’m honored that the story has struck a chord with readers in different parts of the world. I’m thrilled that my comedy of errors has brought you all some enjoyment and I look forward to seeing you again soon.”

And finally, the prolific Québecoise writer/artist Axelle Lenoir is breaking through to English-language readers with What If We Were..., her hilarious (and secretly emotional) celebration of teen girl imagination and relationships, now nominated for Best Humor Publication. “After the year we just had, I was expecting news about a giant volcanic eruption, an alien invasion or a grand comeback of the forgotten murder hornets... The one thing I wasn't expecting was an Eisner award nomination!!" says Lenoir. "I feel equally proud and lucky that a book about friendship and creativity got selected!!”

Voting for the Eisner Awards, open to all industry professionals, will be held online through the end of June, and winners will be announced next month during Comic-Con @ Home. For more details, please visit the Eisner Awards site.
