Tate grew up and worked on ranches and farms throughout the rural west of the US, horseback riding, herding cattle, and otherwise performing hands-on research into the world of Red Plains. The first collaboration between artist Noel Tuazon and herself was for the 2005 publication of children's picture book Sunny Bear's Rainy Day. Caryn's creative influences are diverse, and include but are not limited to writers like David Simon, Grant Morrison, Kazuo Koike, and directors like Martin Scorsese, and Spike Lee, to name just a few.
